Installing Tomcat on Windows

Here is how to install tomcat on windows. It is really easy!

1. Download tomcat

Go to the apache tomcat site and download tomcat. You can get it here

I chose tomcat 6 because I know it has been tried and tested and will be compatible with java versions 1.5, 1.6, and 1.7. Not that we will be needing to use java 1.5, but still. Just in case.

I found the right files in the Download section of the site. I went to
Tomcat 6.0->Binary Distributions->Core->zip

2. Extract tomcat

Extract tomcat to the folder you already created in
C:\Program Files\Apache\

That’s it. No need to run anything.

3. Verify your Java JDK/JRE installation

Go to your environment variables and verify that you have the system variable JAVA_HOME set to your jdk installation (which should have a jre inside of it). Verify also that you have %JAVA_HOME%\bin inside your Path variable.

4. Start tomcat

Navigate into the folder you have just created into this directory

C:\Program Files\Apache\apache-tomcat-6.0.35\bin

and double click on “startup.bat” which should start tomcat for you.

5. Run tomcat from a web browser

Open a web browser and type http://localhost:8080/

If tomcat is running correctly, then you should see the default page now.
